Description:
During a sabbatical in 2018 I kept on composing. inspired by ideas of temporality and impermanence. Like many things, music is impermanent, for sound is a vibration that appears out of nothing and disappears right after. I am fascinated by the indifferent beauty of the swelling and fading of a single sound. The Waves was also inspired by poetry of the 13th century Japanese monk Dogen.
Soon after, I arranged a version for string orchestra and for saxophone quartet resp.
In 2019, the string orchestra version was performed by the Amstel Strijkers, conducted by Marien van Staalen and in 2022 by string orchestra de Haagse Beek.
The sax quartet version was first performed by the Prism Quartet in Philadelphia and New York City on June 2 & 3 2019 . The Dutch Syrène Quartet performed it as well and recorded its final version in 2024 on CD. The final print came into being in close collaboration with them.
Special thanks to Tido Visser, Marien van Staalen, Prism Quartet and Syrène Quartet for their for their support and inspiration.
