Description:
Program note (English): [Premiere: 15 July 1989, The Hague]. The 15th century poet and musician Kabir was an inspired prophet who believed in another type of reality than the religious and racially divided society of his time. He was also a mystic. Kabir's mysticism comes to the fore in the texts chosen for the five choral pieces called Cinq Hymnes. These texts directly refer to a sacred interpretation of music. Cinq Hymnes were inspired by the same spirit that moved Kabir. Each hymn has an individual character. The score calls for different combinations of choir and instruments of the five movements as indicated below:
I O mon choeur, for choir and two pianos
II Regarde, for choir a capella
III Le son des clos invisibles, for choir, two pianos and percussion
IV Silence, for choir a cappella
V La source de toute musique, for choir, two pianos and percussion. - TON DE LEEUW
