Dutch ‘avant pop’ composer JacobTV started as a rock musician and studied composition and electronic music; he won the Composition Prize of the Netherlands in 1980. He became a full time composer and soon made a name for himself with melodious compositions, straight from the heart and with great effect. ‘I pepper my music with sugar,’ he says.
The press has called him the ‘Andy Warhol of new music’ and his ‘coming-out’ as a composer of ultra-tonal, mellifluous music reached its climax with the video oratorio Paradiso (2001) based on Dante’s Divina Commedia. In the last 2 decades, JacobTV’s so-called ‘boombox’ works, for live instruments with a grooving sound track based on speech melody, became internationally popular. In 2007 an anthology of his work on CD/DVD was released at a three-day JacobTV festival at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. JacobTV is still considered an ‘outlaw’ in new music, whose work ‘makes many a hip-hop artist look sedate’ (Wall Street Journal). He started a never ending reality opera THE NEWS which is constantly updated and performed by ensembles in Chicago, Rome, Amsterdam, LA, Hamburg New York and the Netherlands. He was the first to receive the BUMA Classical Award, as the best Dutch classical export product in 2015.

Unit, Real Quiet, Onyx-, Ruysdael-, Aurelia-, Prism- and New Century Quartet, Safri Duo, Calefax, Nederlandse Reisopera, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Fulcrumpoint, De Volharding, Fireworks, Gending, Combustion Chamber, Glass Farm & Fifth House Ensemble and many others. Jacob ter Veldhuis wordt geboren op 14 november in Westerlee, Groningen, en groeit op in Winschoten. Hij speelt in verschillende rockbands, onder meer in Ro-d-ys van gitarist Harry Rijnbergen.

Aan het Gronings Conservatorium studeert Jacob ter Veldhuis fluit, hoorn, slagwerk, piano en muziekeducatie (AMV). Daarnaast studeert hij vanaf 1973 compositie bij Willem Frederik Bon en elektronische muziek bij Luctor Ponse. Hij is werkzaam als muziekbibliothecaris en muziekleraar. In 1980 behaalt Ter Veldhuis de Prijs voor Compositie.

Zijn 'Symfonie no. 1' voor orkest en slagwerk gaat in première, uitgevoerd door het Noordelijk Filharmonisch Orkest onder aanvoering van Andrzej Markowski. Het werk wordt twee jaar later uitgevoerd tijdens de Warschauer Herbst in Polen.

Jacob ter Veldhuis richt zich fulltime op een loopbaan als componist. Mede op zijn initiatief wordt de serie 'Buskruitconcerten' voor nieuwe, hedendaagse muziek opgezet in Groningen, als een voorloper van stichting Prime.

Ter Veldhuis is composer-in-residence tijdens de Darmstädter Ferienkurse.

BVHaast brengt een eerste cd met kamermuziek van Ter Veldhuis op de markt, te weten 'Diverso il tempo'; twee jaar later volgt de cd 'Van grote en kleine vogels' op BVHaast.

'String quartet no. 3: There must be some way out of here' (1995) wordt als Nederlandse inzending voor het International Rostrum of Composers genomineerd. Ter Veldhuis is met circa 250 uitvoeringen per jaar een van de meest gespeelde componisten van Nederland.

Choreograaf Hans van Manen maakt twee balletten 'Short Cut' en 'Two Gold Variations' op muziek van Ter Veldhuis: 'String Quartet no. 3' (1995) en 'Gold Rush Concerto' (1997). Zijn compositie 'Lipstick' (1998) wordt geselecteerd voor de International Electroacoustic Music Contest in Bourges, Frankrijk.

Het vier dagen durende 'Jacob ter Veldhuis Festival' in maart wordt opgezet door Theater Lantaren-Venster in Rotterdam. Op 12 september gaat het video-oratorium 'Paradiso' (in samenwerking met videokunstenaar Jaap Drupsteen) voor sopraan, tenor, sampler, vrouwenkoor en orkest in première.

Filmmaker Jan Willem Looze wijdt een documentaire aan Ter Veldhuis, met de titel 'So heavenly it hurts' (OJTV film + tvproducties). De multimediale compositie '…Now…' voor het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest gaat in première tijdens het Holland Festival 2005. In 2006 is Jacob ter Veldhuis composer-in-residence bij het Gelders Orkest.

In mei vindt het driedaagse JacobTV Festival plaats in het Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Een trilogie met cd-box-sets van Ter Veldhuis' belangrijkste werk verschijnt op Basta Music.

Op 17 februari vindt de première van de multimedia show 'Cities Change The Songs Of Birds' plaats in het Muziekcentrum Frits Philips in Eindhoven door de JacobTV Band, waarna de band op tournee gaat door Nederland.

Op 4 mei wordt in Rome de nog niet voltooide video-opera 'The News' uitgevoerd. Het werk is geïnspireerd op het wereldwijde populisme van politieke leiders als Sarah Palin, Barack Obama en Silvio Berlusconi. De aria over Berlusconi 'Corrotto' (Corrupt) wordt door het publiek goed ontvangen. Maar het museum voor hedendaagse kunst MAXXI verzoekt Ter Veldhuis de aria niet op te nemen in de compilatie die hij voor het museum maakt.
