See-through : for orchestra, 2000, revision 2001 / Michel van der Aa
Description:
Program note (English): 'See-through' is a work with two faces. A direct, theatrical front built around an intellectual, conceptual skeleton. The harmonic material used is sparse, the piece features just 9 chords. Layers in the music change perspective. Hard cutting sounds in the percussion parts act as joints, dynamics suddenly change and the perspective shifts. Passages in the background abruptly jump to the front. The layer in the back is left to just stir up the front layers surface. There are interruptions in the music, moments of ridged musical standstill. This happens not only in the full orchestra but also in smaller instrumental layers. Groups of musicians lose themselves in isolated autistic sequences and snap out of it to melt again into the rest of the orchestra. 'See-through' is a work about the failing of continuity. - MICHEL VAN DER AA
