Verstelwerk : for tenor saxophone, piano, percussion and chamber orchestra, 1996 / Guus Janssen
Description:
Program note (English): [Première: 19 oktober 1996 - Realschule, Donaueschingen - Ensemble LOOS, Radio Kamerorkest cond. P. Eötvös] - Verstelwerk (Mending) is based on a series of twelve triads. A 'tonal' route is followed, but the route soon turns out to be rather mountainous and either badly maintained or very battered. Each instrumental solo part plays a characteri. The piano consists of virtuoso composed melodic lines, the saxophone solo is completely improvised as if it were jazz, and the percussionist, who performs rather independently from the conductor as an improvising 'timer', plays a self-made instrument depicting the creaking of the system upon which the composition is based. - GUUS JANSSEN
