Description:
The sampler made its debut in music at the end of the eighties. In 1987 - especially for this commission - I became the proud owner of the Akai S900. Lucebert's whimsically expressive poetry required a large palette of timbres and I sampled everything that made noise: wine glasses, pots and pans, a leaking gutter, a dripping drainpipe and voices of my girlfriend Kristien and others. Also I owned the PPG2 in addition to Yamaha's renowned DX7. The soundtrack was mixed to a Revox mastering machine from a Fostex eight-track, very advanced at the time.
I still had to write the score by hand though, computers were still too limited. Djoke sang it many times in museums, at exhibition openings, live on the radio in Ton Hartsuiker's Musica Nova, and I usually did the sound engineering myself.
I added a literal English translation to make the music more accessible internationally.
