Description:
Program note (English): The orchestral work Tala is inspired by authentic Indian music. It can be considered as a frame story in five acts, in which the theme 'the cycle' is centrally located. In the first, third and fifth part this theme is developed in always returning in a cyclical drum pattern, which shows a strong affinity to the tabla patterns in traditional Indian music. The Indian name for such a cyclic rhythmic pattern is Tala. In the parts two and four, related to each other this theme is however developed in a continuous reoccurring varied bass sequence. One can compare this form of recurrence more or less with the color and the talea method, which was used in the isorhythmic motet. The orchestral work Tala can therefore be consider as a confrontation between two cultures; namely, between East and West (Tala and Talea). - JAN ROKUS VAN ROOSENDAEL
