Description:
In 1977, I decided to compose a parody on twelve tone music, aka as dodecaphony. 13 in 12 was originally scored for clarinet solo, 3 flutes, vibes and double bass. In my opinion composers who wrote dodecaphonic music had more in common with scientists than with artists. To me, a pure rational approach to art, often called conceptual art is not interesting at all. Music is first of all a spiritual art form. Twelve tone music is music in which all 12 tones are equal, meaning simply, that one particular note cannot sound again until all other 11 notes have sounded. 13 in 12, or thirteen in a dozen, is a Dutch expression and a contradictio intermines. It means ‘ run off the mill’ : it all amounts to the same thing. And that what dodecaphony sounds to my ears… Like gravel, as Dutch composer Peter Schat once said. In 13 in 12, the solo clarinet plays a twelve tone melody, but a thirteenth note is added: a multiphonic, which does not belong there…After the premiere of 13 in 12 in 1983, soloist Pierre Lafayette asked me to write an extract of the solo part, hence the title of this clarinet solo version.
