Description:
Program note (English): In Octet, a diatonic motif is used in such a way that it results in music which alternately tends towards tonality, and moves far away from it. Between these two extremes, all sorts of con\-frontations occur. To achieve the utmost openness, avoiding as much as possible a strict, compelling structure, a montage form of short, small movements was taken as a starting point.
Openness also results from the monophony of the piece, and all polyphony arises out of developing this monophony (including heterophony). The ensemble consists of two contrasting, symmetric trios: violin, cello and double bass, versus trumpet, French horn and trombone, and is completed by clarinet and bassoon, which, in terms of tone colour, can establish various kinds of bridges between the two trios. - GUUS JANSSEN
