Description:
AVRO-TROS had asked me to compose an optimistic piece to celebrate the opening of the season 2022-2023. Not an easy task in these turbulent and oppressive times, but I hope I achieved in
writing a dynamic piece full of energy, and joy de vivre.
In De Rerum Natura, ( The Nature of Things), the Roman philosopher Lucretius explores Epicurean physics through poetic language. The principles of atoms, the nature of mind and soul, sensation and thought and the development of the world and its phenomena. A world guided by chance, not by divine intervention. But hey, we’re here: It’s a miracle that we’ even exist!
In Paradiddle I used a few wise words from De Rerun Natura: We are stardust. Small particles will move forever in an endless dance. Thus, everything is ever being renewed, and like runners, pass on the torch of life.
A paradiddle is a percussion technique to produce a roll. The energy of 2 drum sticks, producing a dense kind of noise is a metaphor for the stardust that Lucretius is talking about.
