The piece was ordered by the Nederlands Klarinetkwartet, who played it a lot. Drahtgeflecht is the German word for chicken wire and is about a drama in a hen house; it has four movements, of which the titles speak for themselves:

Die Hünchen (the chicken)
Das Ei (the egg)
Drahtgeflecht (chicken wire)
Nach dem Fuchs (after the fox)
