Description:
Program note (English): Heterostase is about musical acrobatics. Inspired by Harry Sparnaays musicianship and instrumental skills and no less by his encouragement to pursue the creation of new music, I was able to design one of the most rewarding exercises in my compositional career. Heterostase is at the opposite of homeostasis. Instead of a desire for stability and balance, there is a desire for variability and change on every controllable level. Although written for a trio, the ensemble often operates as a quartet when the pianist plays two contrasting parts simultaneously. In the space of 11 minutes an elusive rhythm of 250 contrasting musical actions was created out of 10 possible 'states' which are either solo, in harmony or in various combinations of opposition. The performance sparkles with the brilliance of three genuine virtuoso enjoying a show of breathtaking acrobatics. - JAN VRIEND
