From the start, Jan Vriend has been a musical omnivore who combines a strongly modernistic approach with openness to the interests of and needs for a good musical education. As a co-founder of the Asko Ensemble, he has had far-reaching influence on Dutch musical life. His music, initially influenced by composers such as Edgar Varèse and Iannis Xenakis, has evolved over the years to a more open idiom that leaves greater room for allusions to and use of stylistic devices from the past. Typical are its grand gestures, exuberance and all-encompassing nature. “My current style is not so readily described,” he said in de Volkskrant in 2009. “I go in a new direction with each piece. That is both the difficulty and the adventure.”
1960 - 1967
Jan Vriend (10 november 1938, Benningbroek) studeert piano (bij Else Krijgsman), muziektheorie (bij Anthon van der Horst en Jan Felderhof) en compositie (bij Ton de Leeuw) aan het Amsterdams Conservatorium. Hij volgt de cursus elektronische muziek aan het Instituut voor Sonologie.
1961 - 1970
Vriend leidt verschillende koren, ensembles en orkesten. Hij is in 1965 mede-oprichter en eerste dirigent van het Amsterdams Studenten Kamer Orkest (het tegenwoordige Asko|Schönberg), waarvan hij tot 1971 artistiek leider is. In 1966 behaalt hij de Schnittger Orgelprijs voor zijn compositie 'Herfst' (1965).
1967 - 1968
Jan Vriend rondt zijn studie af met de Prijs voor Compositie aan het Amsterdams Conservatorium. De prijs levert hem een studiebeurs op voor studies in Parijs, waar hij o.m. een cursus van Iannis Xenakis volgt aan de Schola Cantorum en workshops bij de Groupe de Recherches Musicales van de ORTF.
1968 - 1969
Vriend is leraar muziektheorie en dirigent van ensembles voor hedendaagse muziek aan het Utrechts Conservatorium. Hij volgt er tevens een slagwerkcursus.
1970 - 1975
Jan Vriend wint de Gaudeamus Internationale Compositieprijs 1970 voor 'Huantan' (1968). Dit stelt hem in staat wiskunde en aanverwante wetenschappen te studeren, voornamelijk met het oog op compositorische toepassingen. Met componist Jos Kunst presenteert hij in 1971 een radioserie over 'verschillende manieren om naar muziek te luisteren'.
1984
Vriend vestigt zich in Gloucestershire (Engeland) waar hij gedurende 5 jaar dirigent is van het New Stroud Orchestra (1986-1991), het tegenwoordige Stroud Symphony Orchestra. Sindsdien leeft en werkt hij in Engeland.
1995
Jan Vriend legt zich voor enige tijd toe op professioneel piano spelen, met name in uitvoeringen van Albéniz’s Iberia Suite.
