Description:
The underlying book is the first of a series of Motet Books with an index page titled: Liber primus quinque et viginti musicales quattuor vocum Motettos complectitur/quorum nomina tabella sequens indicat (First Book of 25 Motets for 4 voices). The composers in this book are mostly French or Franco-Flemish. Some are well known (Willaert, Sermisy, Mouton, Gombert, Richafort, Verdelot), others rare (Lherritier, Gascogne, Hellinck) or unknown at all to me (Le Bouteillier, Couillart, Vermont). Some works are surprisingly fresh to the ears (Gascogne). Their style is quite similar, and rather common for their period. The style can be characterized as transitional between Josquin and Palestrina. The text setting is obviously French in some places, more at random and not syllabled like in Italian editions. Therefore the text setting in the modern edition is highly editorial and more common to non-French standards.
