Circles Around a Broken Dream : String quartet Nº 1 / Rieteke Hölscher
Description:
Inspired by String Quartet No. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich, this string quartet also tells the story of the process of dealing with a loss.
At first you can hear soft tremolos combined with pizzicato glissandos – according to the composer this main motive is the event of the loss itself – this motive is alternated with other musical motives and themes that represent the different stages of mourning, successively there is: denial, anger, confusion, sadness, and finally a kind of acceptance.
Just like Shostakovich, Hölscher writes a signature in this work, consisting of the letters C.HSCHE.
