Hölscher, Rieteke

Rieteke Hölscher (1969) studied piano classical music and jazz / pop at the conservatory of the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (1987-1992). She studied with Frans van Dalen, Fania Chapiro, Hans Broekman and Tine Schneider. After her graduation she had solo-lessons with concert pianist Rian de Waal (1993-1999).
Since 1993, she developed herself as an all-round musician: she is a frequent performer and has a flourishing practice as piano-teacher; also she is acting as a conductor and church musician. In 2011 she started with composition-lessons with Jeroen D’hoe. This resulted in a study Master of Music - Composition with Jeroen D´hoe and Caroline Ansink at the Utrecht Conservatory (2013). In June 2016 she received her Masters degree.
Hölscher was nominated in September 2012 for the Composition Prize of 'Muziek Centrum Nederland'. In 2015 she was also a laureate of 'Save the Bassoon' (a composition contest in cooperation with Bram van Sambeek, Gaudeamus and the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam). Her compositions were among others performed by the Utrechtse Studenten Cantorij, pianist Marcel Worms and Jeugdsymfonieorkest Bloembollenstreek.
In her compositions Hölscher aims to achieve a unique sound with great accessibility, with the ideal to bridge the gap between music history, contemporary music and the audience. Her music is best described as emotionally-communicative, with frequent use of lyrical-melodic lines. Her music is neotonal and narrative, with a lot of colors and attention for timbre, and original use of contemporary extended techniques.
In her compositions Hölscher has a strong commitment to audience and performers without making creative concessions. Her oeuvre consists of compositions for solo (piano/violin/harp/bassoon) and small ensembles (e.g. songs, string quartets, harp-trio), as well as a number of larger works, including a piano concerto for youth orchestra.
Her latest work was among others performed in October 2016 during the 'Gaudeamus Muziekweek Sessies' in Utrecht. Hölscher is currently working on a symphonic educational work, songs on poems by the English poet Kate Foley and a project with visual designer Marij Janssen. For the near future also a work for eight bassoons is planned.
