Description:
Program note (English): This concert was written for the inauguration concerts of the restored Cavillé-Col organ in the Haarlem concert hall in 2006. Although the specific tonal qualities of the Haarlem instrument are exploited, the piece is written with the possibilities of the universal organ sound in mind. The concerto is scored so that most of the wind and percussion players will be usually present at a symphonic concert and only a few extra players have to be invited for the performance of this piece. The abundance of colorful sound resources of the instrumentation is used in connection to the organ sound - the organ is also a wind instrument - as well as in contrast to it. The harmonium is chosen as a musical and theatrical contrast to the organ and as an instrument which is closely related to - and almost born from - the organ. An interesting aspect is the fact that Cavaillé-Coll himself seems to have been a pioneer in the building of harmoniums. It should be positioned at the front of the
stage in order to be visible and audible; if necessary it can be replaced by a synthesizer or electronic keyboard. The third movement (Confrontation), in which the harmonium appears, has another link to French culture: it makes a reference to Prière des Orgues from Erik Satie's Messe des Pauvres. - Piet Kee
