Description:
Program note (English): "Khepera is a form of the rising sun, and his seat is in the boat of the Sun-god. He is the god of matter which is on the point of passing from inertness into life, and also of the dead body from which a spiritual and glorified body is about to burst forth. His emblem is a beetle." (From: The Book of the Dead. - London: Routledge & Kegan, 1960) - Khepera can be played on its own, or in combination with Gravity's dance for piano solo (1983/86), Aura for piano solo (1994) and Heterostase for flute, bass clarinet and piano (1980), to form the cycle ECLIPSE, in which case it is made to fit seamlessly between Gravity's dance and Heterostase. Likewise, Aura was written to connect Khepera and Heterostase. The cycle has a total duration of approximately 40 minutes. The 4 works should be played in the following order: Gravity's dance for piano solo (15 minutes) - Khepera (10 minutes) - Aura for piano solo (3 minutes) and Heterostase for flute, bass clarinet and piano (10 minutes).
My composition Athena Keramitis for contrabass flute and bass clarinet (1985) was initially designed to fulfill Khepera's role, but insuperable problems with the unruly character of the contrabass flute prevented the dedicatees from ever performing it, although a courageous but not altogether satisfactory effort was made by Jos Zwaanenburg in 1994 to perform it on bass flute with additional electronics to approach the effect of the contrabass flute. Eventually, after 12 years, I decided to provide my friends with something which should, once and for all, quell any further excuse to beat around the bush ... - JAN VRIEND
