Description:
Program note (English): In The Circumference Of My Solitude is inspired by a passage in the diaries of Anaïs Nin. She describes herself lying in bed with her husband; the more his arms tighten in a circle around her, the more solitary and lonely she feels. The violist represents the woman and proceeds through a cycle of agitated tremolo and pizzicato patterns. Meanwhile the bassist envelops her nervous gestures within a different rhythmic cycle of long and heavy open-stringed (scordatura) drones. As in a number of my other recent pieces, the recognizable rhythms and pitch patterns generate a sense of cyclical expectancy. However, at the end of this piece, the players have switched 'roles', exchanging their patterns in the form of a circle. - VANESSA LANN
