Description:
Piano and strings form a unity. The string parts are like shadows of the piano part, by unison instrumentation or by imitation. The first two movements have been written almost entirely with just the seven white keys of the piano, to obtain transparency and to avoid chromatic turbidity. The third part was composed with just the five black keys of the piano, to which the c and the f where added, thus resulting in the scale of Db major or Bb minor. But apart from some low chords in the coda, tonality is absent. The first two movements are about melody and rhythm, whereas the third part is about harmony. The Concerto has to be performed with extreme energy: extreme dynamics, extreme timing in the fast parts, very strong pizzicati, all very precise and clear!
