Description:
Program note (English): String players are almost always classically trained and, though curious, are often timid about experimenting with 'swingier' kinds of music. This piece is meant to help overcome thaty timidity. It is 'classically modern' in form and content but incorporates rhythmic elements from various non-classical styles. In the first movement a syncopated ostinato, primarily in the viola, provides the pulse and rhythmic drive. The 2nd, pizzicato, movement is full of variations on the idea of the after-beat, which the violin and viola keeping close rein on the much wilder cello. A cantabile viola cadenza introduces an exuberant 'suffle.' One of the elements of non-classical music that translates particularly well to stringed instruments, this shuffle forms the basis of the third and final movement. - LORRE LYNN TRYTTEN
