Description:
Program note (English): The Madrigal Concerto is grafted onto the graphic image and the tonality of the late-medieval madrigal. The elements melody, harmony and rhythm, however, are applied in a rather unusual way. Moreover we find in this work some special singing techniques: a) the entire concerto should be sung without vibrato, in order to obtain an extremely clear choral tone and b) in the first and the fourth madrigal ('Music' and 'Death') the singers should take breath at different moments, thus creating an uninterrupted flow of music. The texts consist of verse in minimal-style, written by means of a computer. They serve primarily as a source of sound for the music, notwithstanding their verbal meaning which originates from the device that was input to the computer in tone-pieces. The absence of dynamics in the performance is very important, in order to avoid emotional and illustrative effects. The Madrigal Concerto is a search for an absolute music for the human voice. - JURRIAAN ANDRIESSEN
