Incantations : for bass clarinet solo and orchestra, (1975) / Theo Loevendie

Description:
Program note (English): Although the work uses traditional notation, avant-garde techniques are present including quarter tones, flutter tonguing, and brief moments that are improvisational in style. The work uses the force and varied effects of the full orchestra, beginning with an intricate violoncello-bass part, and often involving complex rhythms in all parts of the orchestra. The style of the work is dissonant and achieves moments of rest by using fewer instruments and the relaxation of rhythm tension. The bass clarinet part will challenge the most versatile virtuoso including Sparnaay. Incantations is a one movement, multi-section work. The beginning and end of the piece are exceptionally quiet with a frenzy of activity and tension in the middle. The combination of tension and relaxation makes it an emotional experience for the performers as well as for the audience. - THEO LOEVENDIE
