composition
Kaida : for flute, bass clarinet and piano, 1990 / Jan Rokus van Roosendael
Description:
Program note (English): Kaida is the Indian name for improvisation on a basic rhythmic pattern. In reality such improvisations are performed on tabla, but in my composition they have been translated, in an abstract way, for flute, bass clarinet and piano.
The work opens with a slow introduction (alap), in which the basic length of the time cycle is presented. In the second movement the tempo is twice as fast as the one of the opening cycle. After a virtuoso climax in double tempo the composition ends with one single cycle of the slow introduction. - JAN ROKUS VAN ROOSENDAEL
