Ciaccona epica
Description:
Program note (English): I wished to treat the string instruments first of all as vocal instruments. This conception conditioned the formal principle of the composition: the sequence slow - quick - slow. The form of the three movements can be described as a non-strophic ("durchkomponiert") song, a great Rondo and a Chaconne (Variations). In the first and in the last movement timpani have been added to the string body, which reveal neither thematic nor "Concertante" significance, but merely as an ornamental function. - RUDOLF ESCHER
