composition
Anabasis : voor orkest, 1984 / Jan Rokus van Roosendael
Description:
Program note (English): Although the title refers to Xenophon's account of the excursion by the Greeks through Asia-Minor, his Anábasis has nothing to do with my Anabasis. I chose the Greek word anábasis, which means something like: "rise, or uprising, upstream, elevation"... etc. to describe the escalating passages (in small intervals) and the fast development (in large intervals). The pillars of this composition are formed by a recurring, rapidly rising Rakete"-motif, the pediment with its slowly rising and falling structure. The material exists from five different ranges built from three tetrachords. Through the usage of these tetrachords (in total four types) the musical language becomes somewhat modal in character. Anabasis is a composition with many contrasts: fast-slow, aggression-resignation, light-dark, movement and eventually at the end, following the last pillar, rest. - JAN ROKUS VAN ROOSENDAEL
