Description:
Program note (English): I was asked in 1985 to write a short piece, which could serve as an opening work of the concerts of the Student Orchestra of the Netherlands (NSO). I chose for a form, which is slightly similar to the pre-classical overture, in Italian known as sinfonia. The similarity agreement is however only of an external nature and is related solely to the three movements of the sinfonia. In my Sinfonia the first part is repeated, with many in triplet patterns in the woodwinds. The origin of the word 'sinfonia' is Greek, where it literally means agreement, harmony. Additionally among other things the intervals of fourth, fifth and octave, intervals which play an important role in the harmonious structure of my Sinfonia, as sounding together, the harmony in this work is distilled from a harmonic coming from a 'cantus firmus' in the bass. Sufficient reason to entitle the piece Sinfonia. The instrumentation is tailored to symphonic orchestra and technically to the possibilities of the NSO,
which are in no way minor. - GEERT VAN KEULEN
