Remarks: Program note:
Ephemerae is a collection of three pieces. All deal with sound transparency. In the first, After Images, a forceful musical gesture stated at the very beginning of the piece develops by reappearing again and again in new forms, as visual afterimages do when we close our eyes.
In the second piece, Threads, percussion instruments, joined by woodwinds, play a game of sound color. An ever-changing texture alternates instruments kaleidoscopically, creating the bedrock for further emergencies and dissolutions of After Images’ first theme.
The third piece, Canon, is a lullaby. While the foreground melodies unfold as a canon, the piece as a whole traces a sonic arch, moving from a sparse to a dense texture before diffusing again in the final section of the composition.
All three pieces end with a sonic dissolution. Inexorably, the musical elements are progressively lost and transfigured into silence, conceived as a peaceful release. During this process of sonic liquefaction, the delicate fabric of sound shows itself in all its richness.
