Program Note:
Composed in 2015, Iso-Polyphony Multiverse occupies a musical territory that lies beyond the conventional tonal–atonal dichotomy. Its sound world emerges from what I have come to define as a
“third space” – a conceptual and sonic dimension that draws upon the latent genotypes of archaic musical cultures, particularly those embedded in the Albanian folk tradition. Throughout my creative work, I have been engaged in an ongoing dialogue with Albanian musical folklore, seeking not to quote or arrange, but to reimagine its inner structures, its polyphonic DNA, within a contemporary idiom. This exploration has led me to identify and develop concepts such as iso-polyphony, cluster isos, hidden polyphony, folk serialism, frozen polypentatonics, fractals and kaba, and pre-fabricated melodic cells. These ideas have taken shape across a body of works—including 88 (1993), Epitaph and Cry (1993), Avaz I and Avaz II (1993–94), DdA (1994), Genotype (1996), Iso-Lament (1996), Trias (1996), Shatra-Patra (1997), Ep-Event (1997), A Psalmodie Bono (1999), HOAX (2000), and Eumenides (2000), among others. In Iso-Polyphony Multiverse, these creative threads converge in an orchestral setting where the echo of ancestral voices meets the possibilities of modern sound. The work is both a continuation and a condensation of my efforts to shape a music that speaks from within tradition, while facing outward toward contemporary expression.
