Program note:
Inspired by the postmodern minimalistic artwork Split Ring by Robert Mangold, this piece translates its visual gestures into sound. Beginning with pitch C in the first piano, semitonal interplay with the second piano creates a “splitting” image that gradually expands into a dramatic climax. A contrasting central section emphasizes single pitches across registers, with gestures evolving toward the next peak. The final section recalls the opening but enriches it with extended melodic lines and extremeregister interplay. The dynamic flow of the artwork’s circular lines is mirrored in the interactive transformations between the two pianos.
