Program Note:
This work is inspired by the contemporary minimalist artwork Swing Low (by David Annesley in 1964). The saxophone embodies the central curving blue form, while the piano reflects the two outer yellow trapezoids. Their interplay mirrors the dynamic superimposition of pitch material between the two instruments, creating a dialogue of contrast and convergence.
The piece unfolds in three sections. The outer sections emphasize continuity and gradual transformation, with rhythmic figures and pitch material evolving over time. The middle section provides marked contrast in atmosphere and gesture, breaking away from the outer sections’ flow. Each part begins with single, isolated pitches that gradually expand into broader pitch collections, offering increasing variety and richness as the music develops.
