Program Note:
Transformation is a broad idea that appears across many fields. In mathematics it denotes changes such as rotation, reflection, translation, dilation, and compression. In biology it describes the transfer of genetic material from one cell to another, producing a cell with altered genetic code. In music, transformation refers to the gradual reshaping of musical parameters—pitch content, pitch space, rhythm, pulse, density, and gesture. The piece opens with a single emphasized pitch that gradually unfolds into a larger pitch world through addition and subtraction, and through chromatic and diatonic interplay across different transpositional levels. The central section contrasts sharply: textures thin out and the music takes on a meditative character. Throughout, the original motivic material—specific set-classes introduced at the opening—remains recognizable even as it migrates into new pitch-class spaces. The final section recalls the gestures and sonorities of the opening, now grouped into sextuplets. Overall, the work is rooted in minimalist practice: repetition and subtle variation of small figures drive the music’s forward motion while transformation of those figures creates a sense of continuous development.
