Flaming Passion 焰情 : for flute, cello and piano / Man-Ching Yu Donald
Author(s):
Yu, Donald
(Composer)
Description:
The piece is inspired by the modern Chinese painting “Flaming Passion” by Zhang Guanghai. It opens with impressionistic and subtle pianistic gestures, soon joined by the cello and flute, which enter in a fragmentary manner, creating a contrapuntal interplay with the piano. As the music progresses, it gradually builds to a climax where the two instruments and the piano reveal extreme registral tone colors. Near the end, the music fades away in a mysterious manner. Overall, the composition embodies a fusion of oriental colors, pentatonic materials, and modern musical languages, often featuring dramatic dynamic variations and shifts within a brief span. This reflects the vibrant lines and strong gestures found in the painting.
