Five Dramatic Poems by Ya Hsien - 五首瘂弦詩歌 : for baritone and piano / Man-Ching Yu Donald
Author(s):
Yu, Donald
(Composer)
Description:
In the spring of 2007, writer-in-residence Mr. Ya Hsien commissioned the composer to set five of his poems to music. The resulting collection of art songs comprises five dramatically contrasting poems. The harmonic language of these pieces represents a synthesis of ancient Eastern musical concepts and Western traditions. Specifically, the Eastern influence is rooted in the Tai Chi compositional system, where pitches and scales are systematically formed in correspondence with the ancient Chinese philosophical Tai Chi hexagram, as described by the music theorist Zhao Xiao Sheng.
