As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (Moments of an Odyssey) : for reed quintet / Lowell Dykstra
Author(s):
Dykstra, Lowell
(Composer)
Description:
Abandoning the Cotswolds village that raised him, the young Laurie Lee walks to London. There he makes a living labouring and playing the violin. But, deciding to travel further a field and knowing only the Spanish phrase for ‘Will you please give me a glass of water?’, he heads for Spain. With just a blanket to sleep under and his violin, he spends a year crossing Spain, from Vigo in the north to the southern coast. Only the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War puts an abrupt end to his extraordinary journey.
Like in the (distant) past, there have been and are always travellers passing through the world. Everyone has his or her own motivations. They could be refugees or restless adventurers. They will almost certainly ask themselves along the way whether it was the right decision and think back to their native region with nostalgic feelings.
The composition consists of 9 parts that – in order to maintain continuity – flow into each other almost without interruption. These are moments that express different moods, such as: optimism, desolation, sweetness, doubt and melancholy as well as the echo in the mountains and the vast plains and valleys.
