Ausschweifungen : for chamber orchestra and optional choir / Rick van Veldhuizen
Description:
Ausschweifungen is a tender fairy tale dedicated to a Ukrainian lover I met in Berlin, who passes his days half-conscious, on a whim. The fairy tale is that this person - who is the hero of the piece - with a blurry peripheral vision and sometimes half asleep in the street, has voices pitying him tenderly chanting to him, before a terrifying swarm of birds come to wake him up and exalt him (as those who live on the edge are hardly terrified by what would normally be seen as aberrant or terrifying).
Most of the piece is a vacillating, microtonal lullaby, which then flies off the rails and into a crooked - but sumptuous - apotheosis.
