Description:
Norwegian Mood finds its origin in a contribution for an Istanbul-based composition contest, organized with unflagging enthusiasm by Tolgahan Çoğulu. The theme of the contest was new microtonal guitar-music. Most contributions elaborated on Eastern and Arabic scales - adding some extra frets on the guitar’s fretboard - but I chose to develop a more Western approach in the spirit of Alois Hába. Early in the 20th century this Czech composer used to compose with quarter-notes and even published a ‘Harmonielehre’ in that field. After (dis)tuning three of the guitar’s six strings a quarter-tone lower, almost all frequencies of a 24- note-scale are available. I intended to enhance the so-called ‘natural 7th’ in particular, which plays an important role in so much European folk-music. The Norwegian melody of Lillebjørn Nilsen’s song ‘Danse ikke gråte nå’ provided an interesting base for seven freely formed variations.
