Vanishing point : for piano / Ville Raasakka
Description:
Vanishing Point was commissioned by Risto-Matti Marin for a celebratory concert on the 200th birthday of Wagner. The starting point for the work is a short piano piece by Wagner called Ankunft bei den schwarzen Schwänen – Albumblatt in As-Dur für Klavier (WWV 95).
I wanted to put the original work into a distance. The piece, supposed to be a sonic model, began to go further and further while composing. The only thing remaining from the original is a single pitch: A point in the horizon.
The vanishing point is a term from the visual arts, representing a way of drawing perspective where all the lines in a painting point towards one point. I wanted to create my own landscape, where Wagner is only a focal point in the farthest distance, at the point of vanishing.
