Description:
Noisemakers were used to disturb the performance of the Concertgebouworkest on the 17th of November 1969. They consisted of metal bug clickers and, according to some sources, a small number of rattles and flutes.
In this composition, the events of that evening are recreated with Noisemakers by all players in the orchestra, except the strings. The noise should grow organically and randomly in bar 16 and fade out in the same fashion in bar 18. The players should do no effort to align their noises with their fellow musicians in terms of tempo or rhythm.
Louis Andriessen’s personal noisemaker (in Dutch: knijpkikker) is preserved in the Notenkrakers archive at the International Institute for Social History in Amsterdam.
