Description:
This method book offers a personal approach to generating pitch content for improvisation and composition. It uses original pitch sets as the main kernel for achieving complex melodic phrasing that can morph from consonant to dissonant in an organic way. These pitch sets essentially are series of pitches that are tied to their register and have no Pitch-class, octave equivalency. I call these, “Spirals”. They are technically not derived from the mathematical formula of spirals however, I personally relate the common characteristics of these pitch sets to twirling nature of a spiral. They can create a sense of curving out, folding out or modulation.
Each of the 35 spirals which are included in this method are provided with structural explanations, breakdowns of the repetitions or folding points (when applicable) and an exercise showing different levels of consonance vs dissonance within a phrase. To further demonstrate how this approach could be used in a musical context, a collection of 12 miniatures and 6 concert pieces are included. All miniatures are composed exclusively with the use of some of these spirals whereas the concert pieces are made up of more complex way of implementing the use of spirals in
composition/improvisation, including morphing, transposing and going in and out freely.
Everything is written specifically for the range of the clarinet so it can also serve as an advanced clarinet technique method focusing on intervalic patterns.
