Description:
In 1984 I wrote in Pesaro for Bernadette Verhagen and Arno Bornkamp my first trio, nicknamed Trio Marchese, opus 24 (Chiaroscuro I - da Pesaro). Several trios have devoted themselves to this composition with great dedication, and recently three young musicians even decided to name their trio with the unusual line-up of alto saxophone, viola and piano 'Trio Chiaroscuro'. For this trio, consisting of Maartje van Lent (viola), Ties Mellema (saxophone) and Frans-Bernard van Riel (piano), I have now written a second trio, indeed Trio II.
The subtitle "Moments of Jazzyness" explains itself immediately on listening to the music, but nevertheless deserves a single word at this point. In 1999 I visited the North Sea Jazz Festival with my son Ruben, who was studying jazz bass in those days, my wife and some friends. Impressed by the abundance of styles and techniques, the infectious enthusiasm of the musicians, the intoxicating feast that is music at such a festival, I composed my second trio during the following summer months.
