Description:
I wrote Life Belt for the campaign "Save the Bassoon". Comprising three different motifs, the music begins with a sense of threat with the very low tones. This motif is alternated with the motif of the life belt – a short and higher fluctuating melody, as if floating on the water. Finally, there is the motive of the bassoon itself which is developed in two ways to demonstrate the diverse nature of the instrument: a pattern with a lyrical, melodic line, and a pattern with a more airy and funny character. The motives are interchanged and the music ends with the motif of the bassoon, like a happy ending story.
Thereby I imagine the IJ in Amsterdam, with large boats, and yourself fallen in the water (with your clothes on) – and then you’ll see this life belt floating on the water and you hope you can reach it just in time.
