The 3 masses presented here come from a book with 15 masses, gathered by Andrea Antico in 1516. Its original title was: Liber Quindecim Missarum. It must have been printed in Rome, because Antico worked there until 1520, when he moved to Venice. There he
worked together with one of the other famous Venetian publishers Girolamo Scotto.
De Févin wrote mostly sacred music: 14 masses, 3 Magnificats and 14 motets and 3 Lamentations (2 of which are also available at Donemus). Besides his sacred work there is secular work as well: 14 chansons.
In his style he resembles Josquin’s clarity of texture and design. Writing in the current style he adopted the method of contrasting imitative sections that became usual in the 1490s. In this album the Missa De Feria is a good example of this: every part has a canon counterpart, placed a fourth (diatessaron), fifth (diapente) of octave (diapason) above or under the presented score. This makes the polyphony rather complicated and much less common than what we are used to hear in music of these times.
