composition
Quasi una cadenza : for violin / Nimrod Borenstein
Description:
Written and premiered in 2002, Quasi una cadenza has since become popular with many violinists with performances in Europe, the USA and Japan. The violinist Thomas Gould recorded Quasi una cadenza for his solo violin cd released in 2014.
Quasi una cadenza is both lyrical and virtuosic and - as its name implies - contains all the brilliance and virtuosity of a cadenza: ricochet bowing, left hand pizzicato, fingered and natural harmonics, double stops, trills and a few other violin techniques. However the piece is not entirely a cadenza but "quasi una cadenza" because, with its clear structure, it is more akin to the telling of a story than an improvisation.
Nimrod Borenstein
What performers say:
Quasi una Cadenza is a fantastically idiomatic violin showpiece in the model of the great 20th century violinist-composers like Eugene Ysaye and Fritz Kreisler. This versatile piece can be programmed as a recital opener or as an encore. A useful programme filler that all virtuoso violinists should have in their repertoire and ready to dazzle audiences with!
