Maria Magdalena (aan de voeten van Jesus) : for choir a cappella / Rieteke Hölscher; text Maria Tesselschade Roemers Visscher (1594-1649)
Description:
Mary Magdalene, a biblical figure from the New Testament (one of the women who were present at the crucifixion of Christ), has often been a rather maligned and sinful figure in history. Seen in this light, it's interesting that this poem from the 17th century is a tribute to Mary Magdalena. However, one may be questioning whether the decision to leave everything behind her was the right thing to do for Mary Magdalene; we all know how the story ends: Jesus died eventually: should she have never had any doubts? In particular I tried to add this last element to my composition, mainly detectable in the musical and rhythmic shifts that take place in the otherwise rather Gregorian-like melody.
