Fern sways. Like ferns swaying in the wind, rippling sounds sway past your ears. Bowed percussion and the fluent sound of a vibraphone suggest a constant, slow movement through the piece. A string quartet wanders patiently underneath. Kate Moore was inspired by ferms: ‘It is an enchanting plant, ancient and universal. Its leaves overlap with complex but similar patterns, blossoming and contracting.’ They are plants with ever growing, binary crossed leaves ‘like feathers or wings as phrases of inward and outward movements.’ In groups they sketch out over forest grounds. ‘They drift towards each other,’ the composer explains, like ‘a choreography, braiding three-dimensional impressions of resilient leaves on a light breeze.’
Fern is a hypnotizing piece that sways, like ferns, starting slowly, then gaining momentum. Swaying soothingly, the work intensifies due to the constant beats of a big drum that create weight. Over this a lithopone is singing (a musical instrument made of stones). Patiently Moore spreads out the music and uncovers the riches that are hidden beneath the swaying leaves. ‘They stem from the beginning of time and populate the forest ground. It is dark, cold, rich and fertile there, a place where wealth and secrets are hidden. It is nature’s invisibility cloak.’
