Comes : A challenge to improvise for an organist / Roderik de Man
Description:
“Comes”, literally “companion”, refers to a term used to indicate the answer to the theme of a fugue. In this case the comes is an electronic companion which challenges the organist to an improvisation. The time line of the electronic part is indicated in minutes and seconds in the score which is projected on a computer screen. The counter should be clearly visible to the organist at all times. Specific sounds are indicated in the score (loud pulses, entries of new events etc.). At 02:00 thematic material appears in the electronic part, this material will be given to the organist in notated form before the improvisation. Most of the sounds were derived from samples taken from the organ in order to create an organic unity.
Marcel Wierckx, visual artist, created the video part, which is based on the “tape part” and projected during the improvisations.
