Viola Concerto Nº 1 : for viola and symphony orchestra / Hanna Kulenty
Description:
Viola Concerto Nº 1 was written in 2015, especially for the 50 year jubilee of De Doelen. One could say it is an extended orchestra version of Viola-Viva (written for viola and chamber orchestra in 2013). The positive reactions to this composition (performed by Asko|Schönberg Ensemble and Geneviève Strosser) encouraged Kulenty to compose this orchestra version. Again the incredible French viola player Geneviève Strosser will perform the solo part.
"The compositional technique I am using right now is what I would like to call ‘Musique surrealistique’. The listener is invited in a new sound space of accelerating sounds, bi-tonal harmonies, spectral harmonies and Doppler effects. The music is written in a ‘musically’ way because the world already has enough non-musical experiments.
Music is an art of producing a set of sounds, just like poetry is an art to produce a set of words. Poetry is a set of words, but not every set of words is poetry, is it? Analogous, music is a set of sounds, but can we call each set of sounds music?
It is not worth to destroy the musicality what was developed for centuries, it is not worth tearing down beauty! It is not worth fighting with beauty! Why do we fight it? There is enough space for everyone, there are enough sounds for everyone! For both ‘Avant-garde’ and for ‘Musique surrealistique’!"
