The Stranger / Een vreemdeling op de aarde / Der Fremdling : for alto saxophone and voice / voor altsaxofoon en stem / für Alt-Saxophon und Stimme / Hans Kox
Description:
‘The Stranger’ is based upon a newspaper report, which stimulated the idea of developing the material into a one-man one-acter for John-Edward Kelly. This resulted into a declamation-text ‘woven’ into the music for the alto saxophone. In between the twelve musical episodes, I presented a text which describes a man’s dramatic course of life. The English version resulted from a collaboration with John-Edward Kelly, which deviates at places from the original Dutch text. If so wished, the declamation parts can be presented by another person.
‘The Stranger’ can also be performed as a saxophone solo piece without the declamation parts.
The music was originally written without bar divisions, which were inserted later-on, as requested by John-Edward Kelly. But at a later stage, John-Edward Kelly came back upon his request after understanding why I initially had not wanted to write the music in a bar structure. That is why the work is hereby presented without bar divisions.
