Faux Bourdon Varié : pour bariton et ensemble; opus 56 / Marijn Simons

Publisher's number: 11997
Genre: Vocal music
Subgenre: Voice and instrument(s)
Scoring: ob cl fg tpt perc pf bar 2vl vla vc
Remarks: Faux Bourdon Varie was commissioned by the Nijmeegse Stichting voor Kamermuziek and was composed between 11 May and 16 June 2009. The world premiere took place on 19 January 2010 at De Vereeniging in Nijmegen (The Netherlands) with Mattijs van de Woerd (baritone) and the Nieuw Amsterdams Peil conducted by Marijn Simons. A few years ago Daan Manneke asked me to arrange his Faux Bourdon for solo violin. This idea remained on the shelf until the beginning of this year when I realised I could do something on a bigger scale with this piece. Instead of “just” arranging it for solo violin, I decided to write variations on it. With this idea in mind I composed a work in four movements. The last movement contains the variations on Daan’s piece. Unlike what we find in the traditional “theme and variations” form where the variations are composed on one theme, I approached this form by orchestrating Daan’s entire work and interrupting it three times to compose a variation on the previously heard material. Throughout the last movement one can hear also quotations from other works by Daan Manneke, including Archipel II, Pneoo, Syrinx and Fructus for Sytze. Special thanks to Donemus for providing me with all the necessary scores.
